Makeup, Don’t FakeUp

With the increasingly large numbers of fake cosmetics flooding the Market, health risks have increased tremendously! What could begin as an exciting new product trial can turn into a disastrous nightmare!! I was devastated to find out how many people had been conned into buying fake makeup unknowingly. At each of my makeup classes there was at least one victim and that’s what inspired me to start where I could personally guarantee each and every product myself!

While fake bags and clothes can’t harm you, the use of fake cosmetics is a cause of real concern. While the original products will usually be packed with good ingredients fake cosmetics can expose your skin to harmful ingredients like cyanide, arsenic, rat poison, urine or lead that definitely shouldn’t be in your household, much less your makeup!

Unfortunately, it’s becoming extremely tough to spot fake makeup at first glance. Ive listed a few guidelines that will hopefully help you steer clear of falling into the trap of using these hazardous products unknowingly!

1. Consider the market price:
If the price of the item you’re purchasing is way below market price and it sounds too good to be true, chances are it probably is!

2. Buy from reliable sources:
Choose retailers that are reliable and in good standing. No fly by nights! Some just pop up to make a buck and are gone the next day.

3. Look closely at the packaging:
As close as the replicas get, there are always slight differences in packaging to the original. The quality of the material used, the fonts and colours are usually a good indication. Bad spelling, Uneven Fonts and inconsistent patterns are a dead giveaway. Sometimes you see a version of a product that the brand itself never ever had.

4.  Test the product:
If you’ve already purchased something try testing it out. To maintain a lower price, replicas usually compromise on quality and the product could apply patchy and of a poorer quality to the original. Fakes tend to have a lesser pigment payoff or a slightly different shade.

5. Please avoid makeup sold at China Malls and the like. China has strict laws for products being sold in china and product manufactured in China as well, but products with harmful ingredients are found in our local markets originating from China.

I always advise my students to rather opt for a cheaper alternative from a drug store, one that has undergone testing and gained the necessary health approvals, than buying fake makeup!!

Be careful and make wise decisions!!

Huda Beauty Lip Contour

It’s almost impossible not to fall in love with the flawless UAE blogger Huda Kattan and her lip contour range is no different! She recently launched her set of lip contours which sold out worldwide within moments. And with good reason! The colours are beautiful, the texture sublime and the staying power just incredible!

Each lip contour is a creamy lip pencil that goes on matte and doesn’t move an inch once it’s set! Huda Beauty Lip Contour comes in 9 different shades featured below from left to right: Vixen,Video Star, Icon, Trophy wife, Gossip Gurl, Trendsetter, Bombshell, Cheerleader, Famous.

I’ve been using them in 3 different ways since I got my hands on them.

1. Use them as a lip liner with any lipstick or gloss already in your collection.

2. Apply the lip contour all over the lip as a long lasting matte lip colour.

3. My favourite way: Choose 2 colours of the amazing contour. Apply the darker colour along the outside of the lips. Add small vertical lines in between the lip as well. Apply the second lighter colour over and blend a bit. Overall effect: your lips look fuller and your pout is puffier!  Voila: your lips are now contoured!!!

I’m so excited about this new product and look forward to all the new and amazing things she will share with us in the future! Her amazing personality and vaste knowledge makes her one of my favourite beauty bloggers of all time!!

The contours are scheduled to restock soon. My advice: get your hands on 1 or all ASAP!!

Makeup Detox

A day without makeup can be quite daunting for many of us but just bare with me while I explain what spurred on my mad makeup detox!
I’ve always been pedantic when it comes to removing my makeup thoroughly each day and those who’ve attended my class will know how much I stress on taking makeup free days or opting for tinted moisturizer just to give your skin a break! You might be surprised to know that even though I’m a makeup artist, I don’t wear makeup everyday and strongly believe in keeping your skin healthy at all costs!
I recently came across an experiment in which a lady did not remove her makeup for 30 days. Tests done on her skin cells before and after showed that her skin had aged 10 years in that short time!! Shocking I know!
That was when I decided to begin my makeup detox week!! I decided to have a week free of makeup to allow my skin the opportunity to heal and breath! I can’t lie, I did miss my extra long lashes and rosy cheeks but it was definitely worth it. My skin felt healthier and more luminous given the chance to absorb the skin care products without any distractions!
I really do recommend taking time off your makeup. Not the typical advice you would expect from a makeup blog I know, but bare in mind everything needs to breathe, especially your skin. If you can’t manage an entire week, try a day here and there or opt for lighter products to creams! Another option, if you really can’t bare to go without, is using healthy, mineral based products during the week and saving the heavier items for weekends or special occasions!
Have a glowing week!

Tartelette Love

To say I’m obsessed with healthy ingredients in my makeup is an understatement. As much as I love the new fad pallettes my main concern is the well being of my skin. Take care of your skin and you’ll cut your makeup time down dramatically. Good skin means less stress with concealing and foundation and gives you extra time to spend on creating the artwork of your eyeshadow!

For this reason I am always overjoyed when I find new brands that share my love for good ingredients. Tarte beauty is one those brands. The range is a leader in healthy, eco-chic beauty, offering cruelty-free cosmetics infused with skinvigorating ingredients like superfruit and plant extracts, vitamins, minerals, essential oils and other naturally-derived ingredients. And it gets better! All of their products are formulated without parabens, mineral oil, phthalates, sodium lauryl sulfate, triclosan, synthetic fragrances and gluten. Their products are long lasting and the range of colours are beautiful and blend effortlessly.

I highly recommend trying something from the range. The amazonian clay eyeshadows are my absolute favourite. I’m also very fond of the easy to use contour stick’s. They come in 3 shades and are the easiest to blend from any cream contour I’ve tried! The clay liner and lipsurgence (lip balm with a tint) are 2 other popular items worth giving a try!

tarte-holiday-2015-collection-5 Tarte-Holidaze-Set

This year I’m most excited about their holiday collection. Not only do you recieve insane value for money, the packaging is to die for!!! From sequinz to shimmer there is no way you won’t fall in love with these beauties!

Tarte is available at Sephora in the USA, online and @laboutiquedemaquillage in South Africa.

Hope you become a tartelette too!

Charlotte Tilbury

I’ve been using this range for just over a year now and I find myself always heading back to their gorgeous counter in selfridges when I visit London. This uk brand does not dissappoint and I would put some of her products right up their with my much loved Tom Fords!! Here is a quick overview of her most popular products.

My favourite item in her brand are the eyeshadow quads. The texture is luxurious, easily blendable and the pop of glitter to transform your look from day to night is my favourite part. As many of you are aware I’ve been attending many makeup masterclasses recently and was very excited to see how fond celebrity makeup artists are of these little eyeshadow quads as well. Used alone or mixed with any of your other pallettes these eyeshadows will produce a gorgeous look.  My top 3 shades are the Dolce Vita, Vintage Vamp and Golden Goddess. She also labels each colour (1 . Prime 2. Enhance 3.Smoke 4. Pop) so even beginners can navigate easily through each pallette.

Another item that I’m fond of is the filmstar bronze and glow. The lighter side is perfection and adds a beautiful, subtle glow to your look. The darker shade is slightly too shimmery to be a contour but makes a gorgeous bronzer!

The foundations are very similar to the chanel aqua vitalumiere but slightly more coverage. I still prefer my dior star, tom ford, hourglass, ellisfaas and chanel to these.

For those of you who avoid lip liners because you feel that it dries your lips out you will love the velvety texture of her lip cheats!

Her rock and kohl liners are waterproof, creamy and long lasting. They don’t smudge as easily as most other pencils. The nude is ideal to give you an instantly more awake look!

The glosses have a thicker texture which makes them a little longer lasting than normal glosses. The matte revolution lipsticks have recently won a cosmo beautylab award! The colour range is worth a look at!

The blushes have a very luxurious texture due the finely milled powder they’re made of. They are definately a favourite! Each one also comes with two colours, an outer colour, the swish and a brighter center, the pop. This is such a fun way to apply blusher!

If you are a newbie to the range I recommend you begin with the eyeshadows!! They are awesome!!

How Long does your makeup last?

Many of you have been asking me about the period of time your makeup should be kept before it becomes toxic. Liquids are more prone to growing bacteria than powders, especially if used on sensitive areas where infections can spread easily like your eyes.

Below I’ve added a list of approximate lengths of times you should keep different items in your makeup collection. Hope they help:

Foundation: 12 months. If the foundation  starts to smell weird dispose of it immediately! A good tip for acne or sensitive prone skin to replace your foundation every 6 months as the older formulas tend to irritate the skin more than newer ones!

Liquid concealer: 12 months.

Blush: 2 years

Powder: 2 years

Liquid liners: 6 months

Mascara: 3 to 6 months. Liquid products used on the eye are at most risk of spreading infection. Pencil liners can be kept upto 2 years.

Lipstick: 2 years

Lipgloss: 1 year

Eyeshadows: 2 years

In general liquid products need replacing more often than powders. Keep a close eye on the products you use. If they start to look, feel or smell different is probably best to say good-bye.

Have fun with your makeup but remember to keep your skin happy and healthy 🙂

Louboutin Lips

From the man who brought us red soles, now we have a lipstick on the horizon.
During 2014 Mr Louboutin wanted to give back to the beauty industry what he had borrowed to make his delightful shoe range, the red color on the soles of his shoes.
We fell in love with nail polish range just as quick as we fell for the shoes, now it seems that the beauty range is expanding. A lipstick would be the perfect fit for Louboutin following his nail polish. The lipstick is a wearable piece of makeup it doubles as a ring or a pendant, and is destined to be an iconic red lipstick.
A few lucky souls have got their hands on it so far, we will have to wait to get our hands on the rest of the 38 shades of the Louboutin lip collection . Expected date of debut end of September 2015, Approximate pricing about $90… Cant wait!

Benefit is Here!!

For all my South African loves:

During my latest visit to South Africa I visited Edgar’s in Sandton to browse the launch of the Benefit products!! Those of you who follow me on Instagram or have attended our classes know that I have a large number of Benefit products as favorites in my kit.

It was so lovely to meet the Benefit South Africa team. Ayesha and Vanessa were so lovely and helpful! It’s always wonderful meeting the incredible people behind bringing these amazing products to our doorstep!

I am so excited that all my South African followers can finally get their hands on these incredible products!! An added bonus was the reasonable prices at which the products are priced. It is so much cheaper than Dubai that I couldn’t resist getting more goodies myself!

The porefessional is something I can’t do without. I love the smooth, even base that it creates under your makeup! I’ve recently gotten hooked to their Gimme brow! It adds colour and volume in a few strokes and is perfect for days you’re in a hurry! The cult favorite they’re real mascara is must have!! Pair it with the they’re real liner and you’re good to go!! They’ve just launched it in a range of new exciting colours! My favorite is the striking blue. Use it alone or combine it with a black mascara at the tips of the lashes and the finish is incredible!

A mascara will cost you about 295 South African Rands and the porefessional retails at 395! More locations are set to launch during the month. I highly recommend getting to one near you and trying out this incredible brand!!

Lotsa Love Raeesah 🙂

Makeupforever Aqua Experience

Makeup forever products have been a staple in my kit for a long time and are growing more popular with each workshop.

I have always been a fan of the MUF eye shadows because of their brilliant quality, pigment intensity and the ease with which they blend! The new range of bronzers have also made it to my popularly used draw and the mattifying primer is a savior for oily skin.

I was recently invited to the Aqua event at the Armani Hotel in Dubai. I spent a lovely afternoon playing around with the full Aqua range and thought I’d share my views on my favorite parts.

The Aqua range is a collection of creams, eye liners, lip liners, lip stains, mascaras and aquamatic pens that are waterproof and super long lasting. The great thing about the range is that even though they are waterproof, they are not drying on the skin and still go on looking silky!

The Aqua range has something for everyone. Exciting bold colors for daring looks as well as the more nuetral shades for your classy looks.

The creams pots are amazing. They go on smooth and blend easily. Remember to blend quickly after you place them because once they dry they won’t budge!! You can use them on the eyes, lips and cheeks so the product is good value for money too. It’s a handy item for makeup artists to have on hand. One pot of the fushia cream in your kit can be multi tasked as a blush, lipstick and eyeshadow base.

I was very impressed with the exciting colours and finishes of the liquid liners too! You can create any look you can think of with these and they’re especially fun for those double or triple lines. I tried the gold metallic one above my black liner and the finished look was so catwalk I went and bought the colour immediately.

The lip stains and liners are long lasting and the colour range is extensive. There is something for everyone. I love how the numbers correlate so it’s easy to match colours. They also aren’t as drying as some of the other brands out there.

The new aquamatic range is super convenient for on the go makeup. It is easy to apply straight from the pen and is small enough to pop into your bag when you’re on the move. It’s comes in a variety of colours, cobalt blue being my weakness at the moment.

Overall the range does not disappoint. The colour range is extensive, the texture of the products are creamy and most importantly it’s long lasting. Don’t forget, as with any waterproof makeup, you will need an oil based makeup cleanser to remove it. Also allow for a longer time to remove waterproof makeup as the task is slightly tougher as than normal makeup. The range is amazing for makeup artists who want their makeup to be long lasting and rich in colour as well as for people living in super humid conditions like Dubai where your makeup tends to melt by the minute.

The makeupforever team has so graciously sponsored me with the full aquamatic range. I can’t wait to try out fun looks with them and look forward to our guests trying them out at the upcoming classes! I am also eagerly awaiting the launch of the new ultra HD foundation. The regular HD one is so impressive I can’t begin to imagine the possibilities for the new one!!

Makeup forever is currently available online, at sephora and also at their stand alone store at Dubai mall. A portion of the range can be found at metropolitan in Sandton with the full range promising to hit South African shores soon.

Lotsa Love Raeesah 🙂

Christian Dior Private Collection

One of my favorite perfume collections of all time is the Christian Dior private collection. These perfumes have been created by one of the best perfumers in the world, Francois Demachy. Each scent is unique, some are gentle and soft while others take your senses on a whirlwind ride and leave you wanting more. Even though the private collection has been out for a long time its still one of the best out there. They are available in Dior boutiques and some department stores like Bloomingdales in Dubai and Edgars in Sandton.

Dior has recently created 4 concentrated perfume elixirs. These are perfumed oils that come in 4 scents: musk, oud, rose and amber. They are highly concentrated, long lasting and have a potent smell. The oils are widely used in the Middle East as only a few drops are required to last the day. The best way to use them is to apply a few drops of the oil to the skin followed by a spray of one of the perfumes from the private collection. This process will result in an enhanced, longer lasting fragrance.

My favourite oils are the Oud and Rose. The Rose can be complimented with the Bois D’Argent perfume and the Oud with Gris Montaigne. Oud Ispahan perfume by itself is simply delightful and a must have. Price… its expensive but they last a long time, I prefer to buy the largest bottles of the perfume to ensure more value for money.

Lotsa love Raeesah ☺
